Joan Robertson (Robertson) Smith

Joan Robertson Smith, 89, resident of Las Vegas, NM passed away Friday, May 7, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, JM and Dellamae Robertson of Tucumcari, NM; brothers David E. Robertson, of Spokane, WA and Don Robertson, of Lubbock, TX; daughters Della Mae Smith Boley, of Cushing, OK and Kathy Smith Holster, of Levelland, TX. She is survived by daughter Donna Sue Smith Hinders and Husband Mike of Los Lunas, NM; son Robert Smith of Preston, OK; son in-law Willie Boley of Cushing, OK; son in-law Mike Holster of Levelland, TX; brother Jack Robertson and wife Sandra of Seattle, WA; 12 grandkids and 21 great grandkids. Joan was born in House, NM on May 5, 1932. She graduated from Tucumcari High in 1949. She began her college studies at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX. Her college studies were put on pause while she raised her four children. She earned her BA and teaching certificate from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM in 1970. She earned her MA through NMHU in 1976. She taught math at Robertson High School in Las Vegas, NM and finished her teaching career at her alma mater, NMHU. Joan married Don Smith on December 22, 1951. They were married 63 years until Don's death in 2015. Together they farmed and ranched on properties in and around Las Vegas and on property in Duran, NM. Don and Joan also owned and operated the Las Vegas Livestock auction for seven years. Joan was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Las Vegas, NM where she was active in many activities and was involved in many church leadership functions. Cremation has taken place and burial service will be held at the Duran cemetery on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 10:00 am. Pastor Jesse Boggs will preside over the service. Pastor Mike Holster will preside over the music. In lieu of flower, donations in Joan's memory may be made to First Baptist Church, 201 Mountain View Dr., Las Vegas, NM 87701.
